This 2010-2011 school year we will continue the elective rotation that we used very successfully last year for our 6th graders. The first semester those who have chosen this rotation will rotate each six weeks between choir (a performing art) and art (a visual art.) Because of the large number of students interested in this rotation process, we have added a technology class to the rotation for this year. For the second semester there will only be one choir period and it will meet for the entire semester (no rotations.) There will be one choir class for girls and one for the guys. This rotation process is a great opportunity to expose our students to different electives in their 6th grade year. Let me share with you some of the things that you can expect your child to do in the 6th Grade Choir in addition to learning to sing correctly. A majority of the time spent in first year choir (or band or orchestra) is spent in learning music theory - learning to read music - which includes rhythm and pitch identification. Learning to read music is a lot like learning a foreign language! So expect your child to have daily work and tests (both oral and written) in this class. Having a strong foundation in music theory is a "must" for any music student, be they vocal or instrumental.
I am looking forward to working with these new choir members. I hope I will be able to not only teach them to read music, but also instill in them the joy of singing! - Susan Thrift
